Back-to-School: Which Mask Should I Choose for my Children?

As vaccines roll out throughout Canada, parents are left wondering where this leaves their children in terms of protecting them from the coronavirus. When should children wear a mask? The newest guidelines released by the Public Health Agency of Canada provide information for partially vaccinated Canadians but do not address families with children under the age of 12 years who are not eligible for vaccines yet. This leaves the open question of what to expect when our children return to school or take part in other grouped activities.

Are Children Required to Wear Masks When Returning to School in the Fall?

“CDC recommends universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. Children should return to full-time in-person learning in the fall with layered prevention strategies in place.”

The latest update from the Ontario Government instructs all staff, students and visitors to have a mask while indoors including while in the hallways, during class as well as on school vehicles. If social distancing cannot be adhered to, masks will be required while outdoors as well.

Going back to school can be unnerving for children and parents alike, as it can feel overwhelming to have your child be surrounded by multiple people outside of your household again, especially with the ever-evolving Delta variant. When Should My Unvaccinated Child Wear a Mask?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that children under the age of 12 are better off staying masked when in public spaces and/or around people they don’t live with. Wearing a mask prevents the child from transmitting the coronavirus to others, which is something that should be prioritized, especially if the child’s close circle includes someone who may be compromised.
